Of Church & State is the second recital program I launched this season. Playing with the concept of music inspired by nationalistic fervour and religious leanings, the program includes some very Canadian music by a very Canadian composer, John Burge (who, incidentally, writes astonishingly idiomatic music for the piano) riffing on poetry by Canadian poet Anne Simpson. There’s also Ginastera’s dark and brooding Sonata No. 1, a work which openly muses on the role of his Argentinian culture as it relates to a classically European art form (and includes rousing Goucho dance rhythms to boot).
This program includes an optional multimedia component: an entirely original video that I commissioned and helped produce, which features the beautiful videography of Marie-Cecile Dietlin, the expert drone work of Waël Chanab and the incredible participation of dancer Renata Commisso. Presented alongside the musical program, the video explores further our relationship to our surroundings, city, state, church, religion, and nature, and serves as an excellent companion work to the incredible music on display.
